Chapter 01

We Stood Up

About 7 million to 300,000 years ago

Fire did not make us human. Learning to keep it did.

A woodland split. A pelvis that could walk. Tools, fire, other minds. Branches, not a staircase.

  1. 01Two paths in the same woodland. Not a promotion.
  2. 02A pelvis and a wet print. Walking as a habit, not a miracle.
  3. 03Upright at the tree line. The canopy still close enough to climb.
  1. 01A knee, a vertebra, ochre sediment. The find is always a fragment.
  2. 02Small brain. Bipedal hips. Afarensis walked and still climbed.
  3. 03The Afar badlands keep the clock. Dates shift. The bones stay.
  1. 01Earliest known stone tools, about 3.3 Ma. Contested, and still the oldest we have.
  2. 02The Acheulean handaxe: a teardrop held for a million years.
  3. 03Keeping fire is the invention. Finding it was weather.

  2. 02Denisovans: a high cave, a wide Asia, a genome found late.

Chapter 02

We Settled and Wrote

About 12,000 BCE to 500 CE

Harvests made waiting possible. Waiting made cities.

Agriculture took root in more than one river. Writing, numbers, and medicine were invented in several tongues.

  2. 02China: millet, then rice, rammed earth, river silt.
  3. 03Mesoamerica: maize, beans, squash in one milpa.
  4. 04Andes: potato, quinoa, thin air, stone terraces.

  2. 02A reed into wet clay. Cuneiform as accounting first.
  3. 03Wedges, hieroglyphs, oracle bones, later alphabets. Equal weight.

Chapter 03

We Built a Method

About 500 BCE to 1700

A method is a promise to be wrong in public.

Science is a relay. Paper, algebra, optics, press, telescope. Observe, measure, publish, refute.

Chapter 04

We Amplified Force

1700 to 1900

Once bottled, force did not go back in the bottle.

Steam, steel, spark, germ. Each card is a cascade: what it replaced, and what fifty years then unlocked.

  2. 02Bessemer’s converter. Kelly’s concurrent claim in the United States.

We Split the Atom and Read the Code

1900 to 1990

We learned the world was not the world we had imagined.

Relativity, quantum, flight, penicillin, pile, transistor, helix, satellite, network. The planet became an instrument.
